"This CD is an excellent collection of Americana, Country
and Roots music. The songs are solid with great musicianship and poignant
lyrics which captivate the listener and touch the heart. This album
pays tribute to our American way of life with songs like, "Black
Collar Worker" which is the story of the American coal miner and
the heartbreak that years of working in the black dusty coal mines can
bring to a family. This album celebrates the love of God and country.
Allan Frank is an awesome storyteller and every song paints a vivid
picture of life, love and heartache. There are solemn sad stories which
will bring a tear to the eye and toe tapping fun songs that will make
one wish to stand up and dance. The songs are a clever blend of musical
influence. They include elements of Blue Grass, Folk, Country, Gospel

"Allan Frank is one out of a group of artists which we are
looking forward to seeing at the Country Music Fair in Berlin. Allan's
music is pure tradition. His guitar-dominated songs get right under
your skin, like the catchy opening song "The Long, Long Road".
His dark voice can be heard to its best advantage in the story of "Black
Collar Workers", as well as in the happy Cajun-style song "Deep
In The Everglades". "The Battlefield Suite" consists of two parts.
First we hear the instrumental medley "Night Before Battle" with
the different emotions that are felt by a human in the night before
a battle. Then follows "The Blue And The Grey", which describes
a situation in the American Civil War -- a topic that is rarely mentioned
on "normal" Country records. For westerners or people interested
in history, it is, however, an interesting topic. Above all, it becomes
clear that the feelings before a battle are always the same, no matter
in which century the battle takes place. With "Mr. Bojangles",
Allan has recorded a classical song. Written by himself again, the song
"How To Dream" makes you dream, "Something to Say" makes you
think and "I Got A Song" makes you happy. Allan's catchy Country
music -- traditional from the first to the last note -- is just very
nice to listen to."

"After thirty years as a songsmith Allan Frank finally began working on his record-debut. Therefore THE ROAD SO FAR is not at all an unlikely title for the first CD from this Hollywood based Singer and Songwriter. It's nice traveling with Frank. As a listener he takes you from California down The Long, Long Road deep into the Everglades and from there to One Night In Buffalo. It goes further from the battlefields of the civil-war to a jail in New Orleans.
Frank is definitely inspired by experts like Jerry Jeff Walker,
who's Mr. Bojangle he covers, and Billy Joel and Elton John.
His sympathy for songwriters from the seventies does not all mean that
he is stucked in the past. His melancholy songs carried by his real
warm voice are timeless. His work has a little bit the atmosphere of
Mickey Newbury and not everybody is able to do so. Battlefield Suite,
arranged by Skip Edwards, shows that he also found inspration in concept
albums, while the instrumental tune White Mansions from an 1978 record
composed by Paul Kennerly fits perfectly because his subject deals with
the american-civil war."

"Na bijna dertig jaar songschrijven begon Allan Frank eindelijk
te werken aan een debuutplaat. The Road So Far (Apple Farm Music) is
dus helemaal niet zo’n onwaarschijnlijke titel voor de eerste
cd van deze singer-songwriter uit Hollywood. Het is prettig reizen met
Frank. Van Californië neemt hij de luisteraar mee naar The Long,
Long Road die hem brengt van Deep In The Everglades naar (On) A Night
In Buffalo. Verder gaat het langs de slagvelden van de Burgeroorlog
naar een gevangenis in New Orleans. Frank is duidelijk geïnspireerd
door vakmensen als Jerry Jeff Walker, wiens Mr. Bojangles hij covert,
Billy Joel en Elton John. Die voorliefde voor songschrijvers uit de
jaren zeventig betekent niet dat hij helemaal in die tijd is blijven
hangen. Zijn melancholieke liedjes die door zijn fraaie warme stem worden
gedragen kunnen nog tijden mee. Zijn werk heeft een beetje de sfeer

"Allan Frank komt uit het zuiden van Californië en The
Road So Far is tot mijn grote verbazing zijn debuutalbum, want Frank
klinkt hier als een veteraan, met een band die perfect de fraaie liedjes
begeleidt. De arrangementen zijn subtiel, met invloeden van country
en bluegrass (en helaas af en toe wat gospel) en Frank heeft een aangename
stem. De meeste liedjes schreef hij zelf (vaak wel samen met anderen,
en vaak ook in eerste instantie vóór anderen), maar ook
in de covers, zoals bij Mr Bojangles, weet hij goed te overtuigen. Goede
liedjes, een aangename stem, fraaie arrangementen - kortom, een aanrader
voor iedereen die van goede, goed gebrachte liedjes houdt. Luister zelf
maar naar de fragmenten uit het openingsnummer The Long, Long Road,
het titelnummer dat de cd afsluit en de cover van Mr Bojangles."

"Allan Frank är en singer-songwriter från södra Kalifornien som huvudsakligen står med bootsen i ren countrymusik, men som också doppar tårna i folk och gospel. Rösten är mjukt manlig och melodierna ofta väldigt starka. Lyssna på "Black collar workers", "The blue and the gray", avslutande "The road so far", Allan Franks fina version av "Mr. Bojangles" eller "Lift me up". Inte tokiga låtar, någon av dem.
Textmässigt beskriver Allan Frank verkligheten, så som den kunnat se ut förr i tiden och så som den ser ut idag i USA, men alla spår är inte fundersamma, berättande, historiska eller grubblande heller. "Deep in the everglades" svänger till exempel fint och passar utmärkt för vilken logdans eller honky tonk-party som helst. The Road So Far består av fjorton låtar, vilket känns aningens aning för långt. Men man ska inte klaga när merparten av plattan håller så här hög kvalitet. Mest udda är knappt tre minuter långa "Battlefield suite" vars "Night before battle" är uppdelad i sex olika titlar där både stråkar och marschtrummor får plats. Ett märkligt inslag på plattan som jag inte riktigt ser vitsen med. För övrigt gör mig materialet sällan besviken.
Musikaliskt är det fint med mycket akustiska gitarrer, även
om stråkarna kunde ha skippats vid ett par tillfällen. Likaså
ett par spår mot slutet av cd:n. Helhetsintrycket är dock
positivt och Allan Frank är absolut en kille att hålla ögonen
på även framöver."
